Directors Gotham Chopra and Erik LeDrew explain why Jennifer Lopez is not mentioned in their HBO docuseries about Alex Rodriguez, whom the singer and actress was engaged to before their split in 2021

Chopra said they wanted to "really focus" on Rodriguez's baseball career in the series, and "specifically his PED use"

Rodriguez reportedly asked directors to include mention of his purchase of the Minnesota Timberwolves, but Chopra told him, "Sorry pal, maybe for the sequel"

HBO's docuseries Alex vs ARod dives deep into Alex Rodriguez's life and legacy, but directors Gotham Chopra and Erik LeDrew say there was a specific reason they omitted any mention of Jennifer Lopez, Rodriguez's one-time fiancée.

When asked if anything about the former baseball star's life was "off limits" for the series, Chopra said "nothing was" off the table for him and LeDrew during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

"In terms of his past relationships, we did refer to them visually in some of the sections about his crazy off-field life," Chopra continued, noting Rodriguez's past "indiscretions" and "when he first joined the Yankees."

Chopra said Rodriguez "talked candidly about those mistakes and regrets" from his past in the docuseries while speaking to THR.

When it came to detailing his "most recent high-profile relationship with Lopez," however, Chopra said, "we had made a conscious effort to really focus on his baseball career — and specifically his PED use — and not necessarily to do the total biopic."

Chopra told THR that Rodriguez had his own requests for the project, revealing that the former Yankee "definitely pushed us" to explore his "purchase of and role with the [Minnesota] Timberwolves," the NBA team he officially bought in 2025 after a four year long purchase process.

Chopra said he told Rodriguez, "Sorry pal, maybe for the sequel," regarding the inclusion of his purchase of the Timberwolves.

Despite the lack of mention of Lopez, Rodriguez's ex-wife Cynthia Scurtis appears in the HBO docuseries, admitting she "felt sorry for" her ex-husband.

"He was so stunted when it came to the natural development of a person," Scurtis said in the first episode.

"He was so entrenched in baseball. He was told that’s what he was going to do for so long, and it’s all he did," she added.

Scurtis, who was married to Rodriguez from 2002 until 2008 and share two daughters, described her ex-husband as a "creature of habit" and said she thinks his behavior was a result of his upbringing, and his father abandoning the family when the future MLB star was 9 years old.

“There was a lot of his life that he missed and a lot of stages that we go through as children into young adulthood that mold us and shape us, and he didn’t have those experiences," Scurtis explained, adding, “I could see where his family gave him the position of the head of the family at a very young age.”
