Carol Burnett and Dick Van Dyke first crossed paths in the late 1950s, forming a friendship that has lasted throughout their respective decades-long careers

At the Nov. 4 premiere of Pluribus in West Hollywood, Burnett, 92, opens up to PEOPLE about her bond with Van Dyke, who turns 100 on Dec. 13.

When asked what the comedian and actress loves most about her former Garry Moore Show costar, she replies, “his kindness.”

“His kindness and his…the way he moves. I mean, he's very brilliant as a comedian, and he can do stunts and do all kinds of things, but also he's a very good dramatic actor,” the six-time Emmy winner shares.

Van Dyke made his first appearance on The Carol Burnett Show, which ran for 11 seasons from 1967 to 1978, during season 10, which aired in 1976, and cemented his friendship with the actress.

While the Mary Poppins star's body of work spans from stage performances to TV shows and iconic films, Burnett notes that there's one that stands out.

“Do you remember the one he did – I think it was called The Morning After — and it was one of the greatest performances I've ever seen," she tells PEOPLE. "And that was Dick Vandy. So he's not only a brilliant comedian, he's a brilliant actor."

In 2024, the two pals reunited when Burnett got her hand and footprints cemented at the famous TCL Chinese Theater in Hollywood with Van Dyke by her side.

Through her career, she’s been honored with six Emmys, six Golden Globes, one Grammy and a Kennedy Center honor. Similarly, Van Dyke has won five Emmys, a Grammy and a Tony Award.

Van Dyke is one month shy of turning 100. At a recent Vandy High Tea event at the Vandy Manor in Malibu, Calif., he reflected on the upcoming milestone. The event raised funds to benefit The Van Dyke Endowment of the Arts and the Dick Van Dyke Museum, which is currently in development.

“I'm not officially 100 until December,” he said at the October event. “Two months. Two months.”

Joking, he added, “It'd be funny if I didn't make it.”

“I brag sometimes about how I made it to 100, and the truth is, if I had known I was going to live this long, I would've taken better care of myself,” he continued. “And it is frustrating because I don't know what I did right. Other than her [wife Arlene Silver], I didn't do anything right.”

Pluribus is now streaming on AppleTV.
