Pete Davidson has been working on removing his tattoos for almost five years — but it turns out that he's nowhere near finished.

The 31-year-old Saturday NightLive alum gave an update about the process while speaking with PEOPLE in an interview published on Sunday (Nov. 9). Davidson explained that while he started with he started with the visible parts of his body, he's still got a lot to go.

"I'm almost done with my arms now. I did my hands and neck first," he told the outlet in a recent interview. "I did it in the order of what is most visible."

He continued, "My goal is to be able to wear a T-shirt and not see anything there by the end of this year."

As he started the process back in 2020, fans may think he's almost tattoo-free at this point but it turns out that he actually has a majority of his body left.

"I would say there's like 65, 70% of the tattoos left, and some of them are faded or whatever," Davidson shared.

As for why he made the decision to remove the various ink he'd accumulated over the years, Davidson revealed that it had to do with his mental health at the time.

"I used to be a drug addict and I was a sad person, and I felt ugly and that I needed to be covered up,” he explained to Variety earlier this year. "And I don’t think there’s anything wrong with tattoos, but mine, when I look at them, I remember a sad person that was very unsure."

He continued, "When I look in the mirror, I don't want the reminder of, 'Oh yeah, you were a f--king drug addict. Like, that's why you have SpongeBob smoking a joint on your back.' They should have meaning. Not just that I was high watching Game of Thrones."

In the interview, Davidson also revealed he had already spent $200,000 on the process, noting that it "sucks" and felt like "putting your arm on a grill and burning off a layer."
