Peter Alexander exiting Saturday “Today ”after 22 years at NBC News

Peter Alexander is leaving the Saturday edition of Today.
The journalist announced that he was departing the NBC news show, which he joined in 2018, during the broadcast on Saturday.
"This morning, I am bursting with pride and with gratitude," he said as he announced his exit. "I've had the most incredible experience over 22 years with NBC News."

Alexander, who first joined NBC News in 2004, explained that he's stepping away from his weekend duties in New York to spend more time with his family in Washington, D.C.
"I've been away from my home more than 80 nights in the last seven months," he said. "More than 220 Friday nights away from my family in the last seven years. So in this limited window — before my daughters lose interest in hanging out with me, it's already happened quick — I'm eager to carve out a better balance between my personal and professional lives and challenge myself with something new."
The journalist also shared the polarized reactions from his younger daughter, Emma, and his older daughter, Ava.

"My little one said to me, 'Oh, so wait, I'm gonna get you home 48 extra hours a week? Yeah, I can deal with that,'" he recalled. "And my older one, who's almost 13, said, 'So if I had a job offer that let me be in New York every Friday night away from my family, I would totally take that job.'"
Alexander expressed his profound gratitude to the network and his colleagues. "I was taught family first, the rest is details," he said. "So I just want to be very clear: Thank you for your trust and your confidence, and most of all, thank you to NBC News for what have undoubtedly been the most exciting years of my life."
The broadcaster also said he's been in contact with Today host Savannah Guthrie, who took a leave of absence from the show in the wake of her mother's disappearance but announced this week that she will return on April 6.
"I had a chance to exchange messages with our friend Savannah, who I love so much as well, and I'm thrilled she's gonna come back here," he said. "We'll continue to pray for her. This is not the end. It's the beginning, and it's now the beginning of a new chapter for our friendship. So I just want to say how much I appreciate you guys."

Alexander began his tenure as NBC News' White House correspondent in 2012. He continued to report on the Trump and Biden administrations from Washington even after he joined the Saturday Today show in New York in 2018.
