Brad Garrett and Ray Romano on 'Everybody Loves Raymond' episode 'She's the One'

Even a reliably funny show like Everybody Loves Raymond has episodes that are more hilarious than others. And those are sometimes difficult for the actors to film.

For star Ray Romano, such a challenge came in acting out the seventh season's "She's the One," which aired in 2002. In it, Ray's brother, Robert, who was played by Brad Garrett, brings home a woman (Elizabeth Bogush's Angela) whom he thinks is his match. The problem comes in when Ray sees her very clearly eat a dead fly, and he feels compelled to share the disgusting moment that he witnessed.

Romano and Garrett, who reunited with series creator Phil Rosenthal and costars including Patricia Heaton and Monica Horan at the cast's 30th anniversary reunion special in November, explained some of the difficulty they had filming the memorable scene.

"You know what I think of a lot?" Garrett said. "The episode 'She's the One,' where the girl Robert was dating ate the fly. And when you tried to tell me what you saw in the kitchen, the scene was so great."

Garrett was desperately trying to keep a straight face in front of the camera.

But the even bigger issue was that Romano was struggling physically.

"I almost passed out," he revealed.

Garett recalled that Romano was "screaming."

The script called for Ray to come into the kitchen, where Garrett's Robert and Heaton's Debra were, to "very excitedly" explain what happened. He did more than that.

"I hyperventilated," Romano said, "and if you look very closely, you see me go, oop, oop, 'cause I was gonna pass out."

Garrett than joked, "Who hyperventilates saying a line?"

In April 2024, Romano told PEOPLE that, after rewatching the episodes for the first time in years, he found himself "appreciating them more."

The cast members weren't the only ones who thought the sitcom was funny. Over the course of its nine-season run, from 1996 to 2005, Raymond won 15 Emmy awards.

While they looked back on the funny moments, parts of the reunion were touching, too, such as when the cast paid tribute to late cast members Doris Roberts, Peter Boyle, and Sawyer Sweeten, as well as guest stars, including Fred Willard, Katherine Helmond, and Robert Culp.
