Actress Carrie Fisher, who died on Dec. 27, 2016, was incredibly close with her mother, actress Debbie Reynolds, who died one day later, on Dec. 28, 2016 – and both doted on Fisher's daughter Billie Lourd, herself and actress and now a mother to son Kingston Fisher, 4, and daughter Jackson Joanne, 2.
In the years since their deaths, Lourd has kept their memory alive with sweet tributes on Instagram, as well as sharing their work with her children — including screening Star Wars, in which Fisher played Princess Leia, for her children on Star Wars day this year.
On the anniversary of Fisher's death last year, Lourd (whose father is Fisher's ex Bryan Lourd) shared how her children helped her manage her grief.
“I woke up this morning with a dark cloud over me. But when my kids woke up the dark cloud dissipated and made way for bright glowing sunshine,” she wrote. “Her death anniversary is like an emotional tropical storm. It pours rain a lot of the day but between the storms the light is more beautiful than on any day without storm clouds. There are no rainbows without rain.”
Look back at sweet photos of Lourd with Fisher and Reynolds, whom she has described as her "favorite people,"

"I'm a very distinct personality, definitely different from both of them,” Lourd told PEOPLE of her mother and grandmother. “Well, it's something you learn through generations. I think I've learned to balance my life and my work in a different way than they were able to do, and that was also a product of the times."

On the fifth anniversary of Fisher's death, Lourd wrote a post about her grief, including a powerful bit about listening to the song "Landslide" and having it affect her differently now.
"We loved to sing. We loved Fleetwood Mac," she wrote. "We loved this song. It echoed in our living room throughout my childhood, playing slightly too loudly as she scribbled her marvelous manic musings on yellow legal pads ... I didn't know who to be or what to do after my mom died. I was afraid of changing because I had built my life around her. Then she was gone. And I had to rebuild my life without her. And it wasn't (and still isn't) easy. But time has made me bolder. I never stop missing her but I have gotten stronger with each passing year."

In 2019, Lourd shared this photo with the following caption: "Happy holidays! (But also sad/emotional/weird/stressful holidays!) Sending my love to everyone who has lost someone they loved and is missing them a little extra today. I see you. It’s okay if everything ain’t all merry and bright. It can be a mix of all of it. And it’s all okay. Feel all the feelings - the good and the not so good. Eat something delish they used to love. Put on one of their favorite songs. Tell a story about them. Cry about them. Call one of their friends you haven’t talked to in a while. Be kind and patient with yourself."

Though they were incredibly close while raising Lourd, Reynolds and Fisher did have a complicated relationship as a result of Reynolds' stardom while Fisher was young, including an estrangement in the 1980s.
"It took like 30 years for Carrie to be really happy with me,” Reynolds told PEOPLE in 1988. "I don’t know what the problem ever was. I've had to work at it. I've always been a good mother, but I've always been in show business, and I've been onstage, and I don’t bake cookies, and I don’t stay home."

"Today I am griefful (griefy but grateful). I watch the magic that is my son and daughter and I know she is a piece of that magic. And I feel all the things. The grief. The joy. The longing. The magic. The emptiness. The fullness. And it all coexists in a profound way. Sending my love to everyone out there who needs it," Lourd captioned this photo on the anniversary of her mother's death.

Lourd told PEOPLE she credited her mother and grandmother for her acting chops. “I’d say definitely the comedy is in the genetics. They were better at it than me. I can do a fair bit of tap dancing, not as good as ... young Debbie Reynolds, but that’s also in the genes, although my mom kind of sucked at tap dancing,”
