Hannah Brown and Alan Bersten pose with the Mirrorball Trophy on the series finale of season 28 of 'Dancing with the Stars' in 2019; Xochitl Gomez and Val Chmerkovskiy are crowned winners of season 33 of 'DWTS' in 2023; Daniella Karagach and Iman Shumpert win the trophy on season 30 of 'DWTS' in 2021.
In the midst of its 34th season, Dancing with the Stars is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a special themed night.
The ABC competition series pairs celebrity contestants with a talented crew of professional dancers to compete against each other. Since its 2005 premiere, longtime judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Tonioli and Len Goodman — who died of bone cancer in 2023 and was replaced with former DWTS pro Derek Hough — critique the dance numbers.
Then, audiences vote on the dancing duos to advance and take home the Mirrorball Trophy, later renamed the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy following his death.
Along with inspiring moments and hilarious (and heated!) banter among the judging panel, many celeb amateurs reached new heights after appearing on the show and taking home the top prize. Nicole Scherzinger's career soared after her win on season 10. The former Pussycat Dolls lead singer landed a starring role as Norma Desmond in Andrew Lloyd Webber's 2024 revival of Sunset Blvd. on Broadway.
"This is where my talents truly lie," Scherzinger told PEOPLE in 2023 of her decision to step away from reality TV and onto the stage. "I'm still proving myself."
Season 20 winner Rumer Willis also transitioned from actress to Broadway performer, making her debut as Roxie Hart in Chicago in 2015. In a since-deleted Instagram post, she credited her DWTS partner, Val Chmerkovskiy, for helping spark that transformation.
"I have to thank you as my teacher for challenging me everyday through your own passion and dedication to your art, for pushing me past the limits of what I believed I was capable of and even for occasionally driving me crazy with trying to make all of our dances the best they could be," Willis wrote at the time.
Whether onstage or on-screen, these celebs have reached new heights since joining Dancing with the Stars. Here's a look back at what the winners of each season are up to now.

"I just can't wait for my mom to actually get our hands on this trophy because this is a show that means a lot to her," he told PEOPLE in 2021.
